I probably don't need to say this, but most of the things which cause distortion (amplifier clipping, overdriving the inputs etc..) also push out an extraordinary amount of high frequency energy so you can damage tweeters at what seems like a reasonable sound level. You want to back off as soon as you hear any noticeable distortion just to be safe.

You should find that once the sub shows up everything sounds a heck of a lot louder.
