Rush (Canada)
Beatles (UK)
The Who (UK)
Pink Floyd (UK)
Green Day(USA! USA!)

with many, many more foreign bands in my top ten and top twenty.

R.E.M. threatened for a while to become THE American band, but with Bill Berry's retirement in the mid 1990s due to a brain aneurysm and the band's subsequent shift in direction towards milder music, they didn't reach that perch. And their brand of rock was not always the kind that resonates with the masses anyway.
