I meant to say external amplifier up there. Having a seperate box (i.e. two speakers + box) is a good idea from a "lets do things a little different" and a usability aspect I think. Placing the box centreally on your desk (say near your monitor like you would a little USB hub) and the speakers wherever you like, would give you controls right there (volume, headphone jack, on/off switch), etc.
