Ok, how about this. Put the plasma IN FRONT of the fireplace without using a real fire. That way you can just play "the fire scene" on the plasma but have real heat coming out for realism!
Oh! Wait! then you could get another plasma to put above the "fireplace plasma" to watch movies on....problem solved!
