The browser will hold name server lookups. Routes are not controlled by your computer, they're controlled by the routers your traffic passes through.

So it sounds like a routing table at my ISP is messed up for the Axiom site?

I don't know where Axiom's physical server is, but I expect it is somewhere in Ontario, in which case I should not have so many hops to get there.
