Brian, most TV's have burn in protection options to prevent scenarios like you describe - plus so do most devices you connect to your TV like the amp, PS3, BRD player etc.... Keep in mind there is a difference from a temporary image retention that can be easily and fully reversed versus permanent burn in. Temporary retention may still happen, but permanent burn in is much harder to cause with today's TV's. My 3 year old Panny plasma automatically shuts off if not interacted with in 4 hours or so. IMO burn in susceptibility is not a factor I would consider anymore in my decision to go for plasma or LCD, LED etc...
